The cast, meanwhile, is pure H-game. It will shock nobody watching this show and checking out the character designs for the first time to learn that it's based on an X-rated PC adventure. This animated version doesn't spend much more time perving out than any other anime aimed at teenage guys, though — the fan-service doesn't get too far in the way of the rest of the show. It must be said that some elements of the plot are predictable from time to time. The first episode hangs a couple of obvious pieces of foreshadowing on the wall.

Souma's search for personal revenge is an effective subplot, though, all the more so because he's quite the well-crafted anti-hero. He's just enough of a bastard to give him some edge, but not so much that you'd turn around and simply want to see his head go splatter too. The chief virtue of Baldr Force is that it moves. It has four episodes to get its job done with, so it doesn't waste much time.

Over the last several years, the shift from OVA series running four or six episodes to single-season TV shows that run 11, 12, or 13 means that you sometimes see story concepts stretched well beyond the amount of running time they can reasonably fill. To point out another PC game adaptation, Tsukihime could have stood to run for roughly half as many episodes as it actually got.

Baldr Force serves up a satisfying story on a single disc. Hopefully that's an example that more small-scale productions will choose to follow in the future.
